2008 TRAIL UPDATES (updated 4/9/08)
South Commercial Street In 2008 the off street trail on the east side of South Commercial Street will be extended south past Lakeview School to South Park Avenue. Sidewalk will also be constructed along the west side of South Commercial Street from Bell Street to Lakeview School. RECENT TRAIL ADDITIONS Cecil Street This overpass, constructed in 2007, carries Cecil Street over the Canadian National Railways tracks. Cecil Street was also reconstructed from the overpass to Green Bay Road. The overpass and reconstructed Cecil Street have two lanes of traffic, two on-street bike lanes and two sidewalks. This provides non-motorized traffic with a continuous east-west route through the heart of Neenah that avoids the obstacles of the railroad tracks, the Neenah Slough and USH 41. Barrier Free Riverwalk A portion of the north Riverwalk was constructed in 2007 from N. Commercial Street to the railroad tracks. Carpenter Preserve Neenah's Park and Recreation Commission has prepared a master plan to develop Neenah's largest parkland over the next few years. Named after former mayor Marigen Carpenter, the park extends from Breezewood Lane to CTH G and is sandwiched between the Whitetail Meadows subdivision on the east and the Nature Trails subdivision and Eagle Crest Subdivision on the west. Long range plans include 2.1 miles of mulched walking trails and 1.6 miles of lighted multi-purpose asphalt trails. To date, Eagle Scouts have placed this wood chip trail in the Carpenter Preserve from Breezewood Lane to Pendleton Road. The City has also placed sidewalk through outlots connecting the Carpenter Preserve to the Nature Trail and Eagle Crest subdivisions. Oak Street Bridge Completed in Fall of 2006, the new bridge has two lanes of traffic, two on-street bike lanes and two sidewalks. It has two scenic overlooks in the center - one on the west side and one on the east side - to enhance views of Neenah's waterfront. The bike lanes extend along First Street to Nicolet Blvd. Trestle Trail Opened August 27, 2005. The largest pedestrian trail crossing a body of water in Wisconsin (1,600 feet)! The west trailhead is accessible in the Town of Menasha at Fritse Park and the east trailhead is accessible in the City of Menasha on Water Street. S. Park Avenue The Town of Neenah has extended the off-street trail to from Bell Street to Mahler Park. FUTURE TRAILS Barrier Free Riverwalk Completion of the barrier free 1-mile path will be essential to the success of the entire Riverwalk vision. Completion of the final section of the riverwalk, a path through Island Park, is programmed for 2009. Lake Street Plans call for a mix of on-street and off-street trails on Lake Street between Main Street and Fritse Park in the Town of Menasha, the trailhead for the Trestle Trail. This work will start in either 2009 or 2010. Whispering Pines Trail There is a City lot running parallel to Whispering Pines Lane along the south and west that connects Pendleton Road to Nature Trails Drive. This lot is designated for an off-street trail. A gravel trail is in place on the portion of this lot extending westerly from Pendleton Road. Plans call for a mix of asphalt trail and boardwalk to complete this trail. Winneconne Avenue There is a new trail planned for the south side of Winneconne Avenue from Green Bay Road through the USH 41 interchange. This trail will connect to the trail constructed in 2006 in front of the Westowne development between USH 41 and Tullar Road. When the new trail is constructed, a trail will extend from Green Bay Road to the County Road CB trail. Work on the new trail is tied to road improvements in the Green Bay Road/Winneconne Avenue area. Contest - Win Prizes!
