Tips for Motorists
- Use extra caution at intersections (especially when turning right) and when exiting driveways.
- Keep alert for trail users, "slow down when they're around."
- Share the road. Trail users have the right of way, give them extra room and don't crowd them.
- Be careful around school zones. Young children do not understand the danger that traffic can pose. They are also easily hidden by parked cars, have difficulty judging vehicle speed and distance and may react impulsively by darting out into traffic.
- Don't drink or do drugs and drive.
- Look for trail users before you open your car door.
Tips for Trail Users
- A bicycle or skater is no match for a car - be alert, ride defensively and make eye contact with motorists.
- Bicyclists should ride in the direction of traffic whether they are on the street or the sidewalk.
- When selecting a route, consider the traffic volume, street width and your skill.
- Always wear your helmet when skating or biking! 75% of all bicycle fatalities involve injuries to the head.
- Only cross at corners or at marked crosswalks. Do not enter the street between parked cars.
- Be visible! Wear bright, colorful clothing for daytime riding. Night is dangerous so always wear white or reflective clothing and use lights or reflectors.
- Make sure your bike fits you. If you can straddle the top tube of your frame while comfortable touching the ground with your feet, your bike is a good fit.
